Description

This 20 Minute Wonton Soup is a cozy and flavorful dish featuring tender wontons in a fragrant broth, elevated with a spicy homemade chili oil. Perfect for a quick yet satisfying meal, this recipe balances savory, spicy, and tangy notes with the comfort of a warm soup.

Ingredients

Wonton Soup

  • 3 green onions, chopped (separate the white and light green parts from the dark green tops)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp ginger, minced or grated
  • 4 cups chicken, beef, or vegetable broth
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 12 oz wontons (frozen, e.g., Trader Joe’s Chicken Cilantro Mini Wontons)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1-2 dashes fish sauce
  • 1 dash rice vinegar (optional)

Chili Oil

  • ½ cup neutral oil (peanut, avocado, vegetable, or canola)
  • 1 tsp sesame oil (optional)
  • ¼ cup red pepper flakes
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Optional: 1 cinnamon stick

Instructions

  1. Make the Chili Oil: Combine the red pepper flakes, sesame seeds, minced garlic, minced ginger, sugar, salt, and optional cinnamon stick in a heat-safe bowl. Heat the neutral oil in a small pan until hot (test readiness by dropping a small piece of garlic into the oil; if it sizzles, the oil is ready). Carefully pour the hot oil over the chili mixture and stir well. Set aside to let the flavors infuse. Skip this step if you already have chili oil ready.
  2. Prepare the Soup Base: Melt the coconut oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the white and light green parts of the chopped green onions, minced ginger, and minced garlic. Sauté the mixture until it becomes fragrant, about 1-2 minutes, ensuring the aromatics are soft but not browned.
  3. Add Broth and Simmer: Pour in the chicken, beef, or vegetable broth and bring it to a gentle boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat and let the broth simmer for about 5 minutes to develop flavor.
  4. Cook the Wontons: Add the frozen wontons to the simmering broth along with the soy sauce, fish sauce, and optional dash of rice vinegar. Continue to simmer for a few minutes, approximately 3-5 minutes, until the wontons are heated through and tender. If using pre-cooked wontons, ensure they are fully warmed.
  5. Serve: Ladle the soup into bowls, garnishing each with the dark green tops of the chopped green onions. Drizzle generously with the prepared chili oil for a spicy, aromatic finish. Serve hot and enjoy.

Notes

  • You can use any protein-based or vegetable broth depending on your preference or dietary restrictions.
  • If you prefer less heat, reduce the amount of chili flakes in the chili oil or omit it altogether.
  • The chili oil can be made in advance and stored in a sealed container in the fridge for up to two weeks.
  • For a vegetarian version, choose vegetable broth and omit fish sauce or replace it with soy sauce or tamari.
  • The cinnamon stick in the chili oil adds a subtle warmth and complexity but is optional.
  • You can substitute frozen wontons with homemade or fresh wontons if available.
