Description

These baked apples are filled with a cozy oatmeal, brown sugar, and walnut mixture, then baked until tender and juicy. A classic fall dessert that can be enjoyed on its own or dressed up with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.

Ingredients

6 apples (Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, Jazz, or Envy)

1/2 cup apple juice

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup rolled oats

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 cup finely chopped walnuts

Pinch of salt

5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Pour the apple juice into the bottom of a large baking dish.
  2. Use a paring knife or melon baller to scoop out the core and some of the inside of each apple, leaving enough room for the filling. Arrange the apples upright in the baking dish.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, walnuts, and salt. Stir in the melted butter until the mixture is crumbly and well combined.
  4. Spoon the filling into each apple, pressing it down and mounding some on top.
  5. Bake for about 40 minutes, or until the apples are tender but still hold their shape.
  6. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Top with vanilla ice cream and drizzle with caramel sauce if desired.

Notes

Use firm, slightly tart apples like Honeycrisp or Pink Lady for best results.

Make gluten-free by substituting with certified gluten-free oats and flour.

Customize with pecans, almonds, hazelnuts, or dried fruit like cranberries or raisins.

For a lighter version, reduce the butter or use coconut oil.

Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
