Description

A rich and decadent Black Velvet Cake with dark chocolate layers and silky cream cheese frosting—perfect for festive celebrations and impressing guests.

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably dark cocoa)

1 ½ cups granulated sugar

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp baking powder

½ tsp salt

2 large eggs (room temperature)

1 cup buttermilk

½ cup vegetable oil

2 tsp vanilla extract

8 oz cream cheese (softened)

4 cups powdered sugar

½ cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat eggs and granulated sugar until fluffy. Add buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract; mix well.
  4. Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. To make the frosting, beat softened cream cheese with powdered sugar and heavy cream until smooth and fluffy.
  9. Assemble the cake by spreading frosting between the layers and covering the top and sides.
  10. Decorate as desired for a Halloween-themed finish.

Notes

Add black food coloring to deepen the cake’s dark color.

Mix in mini chocolate chips or crushed cookies for texture.

Top with themed candies or edible glitter for festive flair.

Swap frosting for chocolate ganache for a double-chocolate version.
