Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups (283g) all-purpose flour (scoop and level to measure)
- 2 tsp granulated sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
Wet and Fat Ingredients
- 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, cold and diced into small cubes
- 1 cup (4 oz) Cache Valley Creamery Shredded Triple Cheddar Cheese
- 3 Tbsp chopped fresh chives
- 1 cup (235ml) buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a rimmed 18 by 13-inch baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside for later.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, freshly ground black pepper, and garlic powder until well combined.
- Cut in Butter: Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or a long-pronged fork, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse meal with pea-sized bits of butter throughout.
- Add Cheese and Chives: Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and chopped fresh chives, tossing to distribute them evenly throughout the mixture.
- Incorporate Buttermilk: Pour the buttermilk into the mixture and toss gently until the dough just comes together. If needed, sprinkle 1 to 2 tablespoons more buttermilk and continue tossing, as the dough might seem dry at first but will form a soft dough.
- Portion Dough: Using a 1/4 cup measuring cup, scoop lightly heaping portions of dough. Run a butter knife around the sides of the dough inside the cup to loosen it, then shake the dough gently onto the parchment-lined baking sheet. Space 12 biscuits evenly apart.
- Bake Biscuits: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 12 to 15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the biscuits have risen nicely.
- Serve Warm: Remove from the oven and serve the biscuits warm for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- If the dough seems a bit dry initially, sprinkle an additional 1 to 2 tablespoons of buttermilk and toss gently until it comes together.
- Use cold butter to ensure tender biscuits with flaky texture.
- For sharper flavor, feel free to increase the amount of cheddar cheese or fresh chives.
- Serve these biscuits immediately while warm to enjoy their best texture and flavor.
