Description

Millionaire Gnocchi is a rich, comforting dish that layers pillowy gnocchi with a slow-simmered red sauce, creamy herbed ricotta, and crispy golden breadcrumbs for a luxurious yet cozy meal.

Ingredients

1 pound ground Italian sausage or meatless alternative

12 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

1 medium yellow onion, minced

2 large cloves garlic, minced

1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes

1 teaspoon dried oregano

Salt and red pepper flakes, to taste

68 ounces ricotta cheese

1 small clove garlic, grated

Zest and juice of 1 lemon

Salt, to taste

Minced fresh herbs (chives, parsley, and/or thyme), to taste

2 (16-ounce) packages pre-cooked gnocchi

Breadcrumbs, toasted in olive oil or butter with a pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce: In a skillet, cook the Italian sausage until browned. Remove and set aside.
  2. In the same pan, heat olive oil and sauté onion and garlic until fragrant.
  3. Add crushed tomatoes and oregano, then return sausage to the pan. Simmer gently for 30–45 minutes. Season with salt and red pepper flakes.
  4. Make the ricotta: In a small bowl, mix ricotta, grated garlic, lemon zest and juice, salt, and fresh herbs until smooth. Adjust seasoning to taste.
  5. Cook the gnocchi according to package instructions. Drain and add to the sauce, simmering gently to absorb flavors.
  6. Assemble: Serve gnocchi with sauce, top with herbed ricotta, and finish with golden crispies.

Notes

Swap sausage for turkey, chicken, or plant-based alternatives for variation.

Add mushrooms, zucchini, or spinach for extra vegetables.

Use mascarpone instead of ricotta for added creaminess.

Make the sauce a day ahead; cook gnocchi fresh before serving.

Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days; reheat gently with a splash of broth.
