Description

Salisbury steak is a comforting American classic made with seasoned ground beef patties smothered in a rich mushroom and onion gravy. Hearty, budget-friendly, and ready in under an hour, it’s a perfect weeknight dinner that pairs well with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

1 large egg

½ cup panko breadcrumbs

2 tablespoons A1 steak sauce

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon ketchup

1 tablespoon steak seasoning

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 tablespoon butter (for patties)

3 tablespoons butter (for gravy)

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 ½ cups beef broth or stock

Salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste

8 oz baby Bella mushrooms, sliced

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, steak sauce, Worcestershire, ketchup, steak seasoning, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well with your hands and shape into 4 patties, about ¾ to 1 inch thick.
  2. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add patties and cook for 5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove and keep warm.
  3. Drain excess grease from the skillet, leaving about 1 tablespoon along with pan drippings. Add butter and scrape up browned bits.
  4. Stir in onions and cook for 5 minutes until softened.
  5. Add flour, stirring to coat the onions. Cook for 2 minutes until lightly browned.
  6. Slowly whisk in beef broth, stirring until smooth. Simmer for 3 to 4 minutes until slightly thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  7. Add mushrooms and patties back into the skillet. Reduce heat to low and simmer 7 to 10 minutes until mushrooms are tender and gravy is thick.
  8. Serve warm with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

Notes

Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.

Swap mushrooms for bell peppers or omit if preferred.

Add a splash of red wine to the gravy for deeper flavor.

Make it gluten-free by using gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour.

Patties can be prepared up to 2 days ahead and stored raw until cooking.

Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 5 days or frozen for 3 months.
