Description

A creamy and delicious Vegan Alfredo Sauce made with simple plant-based ingredients, perfect for pairing with pasta or as a rich, dairy-free topping. This quick and easy recipe uses nondairy milk, cornstarch, and vegan parmesan or nutritional yeast to create a smooth, cheesy sauce in just 10 minutes.

Ingredients

Sauce Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk of choice or nondairy creamer
  • 3 1/2 tbsp cornstarch or 5 tbsp flour
  • 2 tbsp oil or vegan butter (for oil free, see notes)
  • 6 tbsp vegan parmesan or nutritional yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt, plus additional salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 2 tsp garlic (minced or powder)

Pasta (Optional)

  • 8 oz pasta

Instructions

  1. Mix Cornstarch and Milk: In a saucepan, whisk the cornstarch into your choice of milk or nondairy creamer until completely dissolved to prevent lumps.
  2. Add Seasonings and Oil: Whisk in the salt, oil or vegan butter, and garlic if using. This helps build flavor and adds richness to the sauce.
  3. Cook the Sauce: Slowly bring the mixture to a boil over low to medium heat. Stir occasionally at first to avoid sticking, then constantly once the sauce begins to thicken to ensure smoothness.
  4. Finish with Cheese: Once thickened, remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vegan parmesan or nutritional yeast until melted and incorporated.
  5. Season to Taste: Taste the sauce and adjust salt and pepper as desired before serving over cooked pasta or your favorite dish.

Notes

  • For an oil-free version, omit the oil or vegan butter; you might want to increase the nutritional yeast slightly for richness.
  • If using all-purpose flour instead of cornstarch, expect a slightly thicker and more opaque sauce.
  • Add garlic or other herbs like parsley for enhanced flavor.
  • This sauce pairs perfectly with any pasta, steamed vegetables, or as a base for casseroles.
