Ingredients
Chicken
- 2 large (or 3 small-medium) boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into ½-inch pieces
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1 teaspoon Chinese five spice
Vegetables
- 3 cups broccoli florets
Sauce
- 1 tablespoon fish sauce (or oyster sauce)
- 2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce
- 2 teaspoons sesame oil
- 2 teaspoons minced garlic
- ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
Other
- ⅓ cup water (or chicken broth)
- ½ cup cold water
- 1 tablespoon corn starch
- Green onions, for garnish
- Sesame seeds, for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the sauce: In a bowl, whisk together all the sauce ingredients except the cold water and corn starch. Set this mixture aside to develop flavor.
- Cook the chicken: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the oil. Add the cut chicken pieces, season them with Chinese five spice, and sauté for 6-8 minutes until the chicken is cooked thoroughly and slightly browned. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set it aside on a plate.
- Sauté the broccoli: In the same skillet, add the broccoli florets and sauté for 2-3 minutes until the edges start to crisp. Pour in ⅓ cup of water or chicken broth, cover if desired, and cook for an additional 4-6 minutes until the broccoli becomes fork-tender but still vibrant and crisp.
- Combine chicken and sauce: Return the cooked chicken to the skillet with the broccoli. Pour the prepared sauce over the ingredients and stir well to combine everything evenly.
- Thicken the sauce: Whisk together ½ cup cold water and 1 tablespoon corn starch in a small bowl until fully dissolved. Pour this mixture into the skillet slowly, stirring continuously. Allow the sauce to thicken for about 1 minute.
- Final cooking and garnish: Continue cooking the stir fry for 2-3 minutes until everything is heated through and the sauce coats the chicken and broccoli nicely. Remove from heat and garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds before serving.
Notes
- Use chicken broth instead of water to enhance the flavor of the broccoli while steaming.
- Adjust the amount of honey to control the sweetness level of the sauce.
- For a spicier version, add a pinch of red chili flakes or a drizzle of chili oil.
- Serve over steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
