Ingredients
Tofu Marinade and Skewers
- 1 (8 ounce) block extra firm tofu, pat dry and cut into 1-inch cubes
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar or white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)
Peanut Dipping Sauce
- 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce or sweet soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon lime juice, freshly squeezed
Instructions
- Marinate the Tofu: In a large mixing bowl, toss the cubed tofu with soy sauce, sesame oil, and vinegar. Stir well to coat each tofu cube evenly in the marinade and let it sit for a few minutes to absorb the flavors.
- Thread Tofu onto Skewers: Carefully thread the marinated tofu cubes onto bamboo skewers, leaving a small space between each cube to ensure even cooking. Add about 4-5 cubes per skewer.
- Preheat Grill Pan and Grill Tofu: Lightly brush a grill pan or large skillet with oil and preheat it over medium-high heat for 1-2 minutes until the oil shimmers. Place the tofu skewers in the pan, making sure they are spaced evenly. Grill each side for 3-4 minutes until golden brown and crispy, occasionally brushing with leftover marinade to enhance flavor.
- Prepare Peanut Dipping Sauce: While the tofu is grilling, whisk together hoisin sauce, peanut butter, water, sesame oil, and freshly squeezed lime juice in a small bowl until the sauce is smooth and well combined. Set aside.
- Serve: Once tofu skewers are grilled, sprinkle the skewers with optional sesame seeds for garnish. Serve immediately with the freshly made peanut dipping sauce for dipping.
Notes
- Make sure to pat the tofu dry to help it absorb the marinade better and achieve a crispy texture when grilled.
- If bamboo skewers are used, soak them in water for 15-20 minutes to prevent burning while grilling.
- You can substitute hoisin sauce with another sweet soy sauce or tamari for a gluten-free option.
- For a smoky flavor, consider adding a pinch of smoked paprika to the marinade.
- This recipe can be easily doubled for larger gatherings.
