Description

This homemade Thai Tea recipe captures the rich, aromatic flavors of traditional Thai street tea using black tea, fragrant spices, and creamy milk. Sweetened with coconut palm sugar and layered with condensed and evaporated milk, this refreshing iced beverage is quick to make and perfect for warm days or when you need a flavorful pick-me-up.

Ingredients

Tea and Spice Mixture

  • 6 Black Tea Bags
  • 2½ cups Water
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla Bean Paste
  • 2 pieces Star Anise
  • 1 tablespoon Whole Cardamom
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick
  • ¼ piece Vanilla Bean
  • 2 teaspoons Ground Turmeric
  • 2 tablespoons Sugar (coconut palm sugar recommended)

Milk Mixture

  • ¼ cup Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • 2 tablespoons Evaporated Milk (or whole milk)

Garnish

  • Mint leaves (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tea Base: Place the black tea bags, water, vanilla bean paste, star anise, cardamom, cinnamon stick, vanilla bean, and ground turmeric into a medium-sized pot. Heat the mixture over medium heat until it begins to simmer.
  2. Simmer the Spices: Once simmering, reduce the heat to low and let the tea and spices gently simmer for 3 to 5 minutes to infuse the flavors fully without becoming bitter.
  3. Strain the Tea: Remove the pot from heat and pour the tea mixture through a fine strainer to remove the tea bags and whole spices, ensuring a smooth tea.
  4. Prepare Glasses: Fill two serving glasses with ice cubes to chill the tea.
  5. Mix the Sweetened Milk: In a small bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk and evaporated or whole milk until smooth and well combined.
  6. Assemble the Drink: Pour the strained hot tea over the ice in the glasses, then gently pour the milk mixture over the iced tea to create a creamy layer.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Add a few fresh mint leaves on top for a refreshing aroma and visual appeal. Serve immediately and enjoy your authentic Thai iced tea.

Notes

  • Use coconut palm sugar for a more authentic and slightly caramel flavor, but white sugar can be substituted.
  • Adjust the sugar quantity according to your sweetness preference.
  • If you prefer a vegan version, substitute sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk with coconut condensed milk or sweetened coconut milk alternatives.
  • Star anise, cardamom, and cinnamon can be adjusted for stronger or milder spice notes.
  • Serving over fresh ice is essential for the chilled experience typical of Thai iced tea.
