Description

This rich and aromatic Tikka Masala Sauce is a flavorful blend of traditional Indian spices simmered with tomatoes and finished with creamy heavy cream. Perfect for pairing with chicken, tofu, or vegetables, this versatile sauce brings authentic Indian restaurant flavors to your home kitchen in just 25 minutes.

Ingredients

Oil and Vegetables

  • 3 tablespoons oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 small bell pepper, chopped (preferably Kashmiri peppers or local equivalent)

Spices and Aromatics

  • 2 tablespoons minced ginger
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons ground turmeric
  • 2 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 2 teaspoons garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne powder (optional for extra spice)
  • Salt to taste (about 1/2 teaspoon)

Tomato Base

  • ¼ cup tomato paste
  • 2 cups tomato sauce (or more to taste)
  • 1 cup water

Finish

  • 1 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Peppers and Onions: Heat the oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and bell peppers. Cook for about 5 minutes until they are softened and slightly translucent, providing a flavorful base for the sauce.
  2. Add the Ginger and Spices: Stir in the minced ginger, garlic, ground cumin, turmeric, coriander, paprika, garam masala, and cayenne powder if using. Cook for about 30 seconds, stirring constantly to bloom the spices and enhance their aroma and depth.
  3. Add the Tomato Elements: Mix in the tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer gently for 10 minutes. Stir occasionally, and if the sauce becomes too thick, add a little water to maintain your desired consistency.
  4. Incorporate the Cream: Finally, pour in the heavy cream and stir well to fully combine. Cook for an additional minute or two to heat through, creating a rich and creamy tikka masala sauce ready to serve.

Notes

  • For a spicier sauce, increase the amount of cayenne powder or add fresh green chilies.
  • Kashmiri peppers add a mild heat and vibrant color, but any sweet or mild bell pepper works.
  • Simmer the sauce longer on low heat for a deeper, more intense flavor.
  • To make it lighter, substitute the heavy cream with coconut milk or plain yogurt.
  • This sauce pairs excellently with grilled chicken, cauliflower, paneer, or tofu.
